Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT)

These are your traditional windmill type turbines that have been around for hundreds of years.  This technology was proven long before coal power even became a thought and is still the preferred power choice for many applications. 

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)

Compared to a typical 3 blade wind turbine with a horizontal axis, these turbines are advantageous in areas where space, sound, and aesthetics are a concern. VAWTS also tend to perform better where stronger, more turbulent winds exist. Unlike HAWTS which have a very similar windmill look to them, there are hundreds of different VAWT designs; some of which look more like pieces of art than an energy producing wind turbine.
